Geography Curriculum Intent

At Thorpe Primary School our overall vision for geography is to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of the world, the people in it and where they fit in through: thinking, engagement, actions and motivation. Geography at Thorpe provides children with the opportunity to develop their local and worldwide knowledge and to have a tolerance of communities, diversity and different cultures around the world.

  • Through our teaching in geography we want to enable children to develop and explore observation, recording, respect and understanding of how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
  • We also want children to develop their enquiry skills in relation to the world’s human and physical similarities and differences.
  • Children will develop key skills in recording and interpreting data, observing changes, learn more about the culture of our country and others and find out about physical features in our world.
  • To learn where they belong within their local and wider community, as well as understanding what impact they can have on the world.
  • To provide and participate in enrichment opportunities for real life experiences, both in and out of the classroom, which incorporate key geographical skills.
  • We want children learn how to enquire, speak and think like geographers.
  • We want children to develop respect and empathy towards cultures and communities.
  • We strive to create a level of understanding whereby children are encouraged to be passionate and responsible for the world around them, both locally and beyond.
  • We want to develop a level of understanding to show how each child’s geographical impact is important and valuable.
