French Curriculum Intent

At Thorpe Primary School, our chosen language is French. Our vision for Modern Foreign Languages is that we help our children to become tolerant, global citizens who are prepared for adult life and have the confidence to communicate in other languages.

We aim to give our children the knowledge of France and other French-speaking countries and support their geographical and world knowledge at the same time as acquiring communication skills.

  • We aim to give our children the knowledge of France and other French-speaking countries and support their geographical and world knowledge at the same time as acquiring communication skills.
  • We aim to provide a variety of speaking, listening and practical activities alongside written tasks to help children develop all skills required when learning a language. At times we will provide immersive days and activities to give children a better understanding of French culture.
  • We want our KS2 children to become confident in speaking, listening, reading and writing in French. Each lesson will encompass all of these elements as an opportunity to practise.
  • We want our KS1 children to become confident with speaking and listening skills. All lessons will  be done verbally to learn basic vocabulary and simple phrases.
  • We want to inspire a lifelong love of language learning and prepare children with basic skills for further study of French when they enter secondary school.
