Design Technology Curriculum Intent

At Thorpe Primary School our overall vision is that Design Technology has the capacity to allow all children of all ages and abilities to imagine, experiment, make and evaluate in a creative manner.

  • Through our teaching of Design and Technology, we want children to develop and build on their skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food.skills, concepts and knowledge each year.
  • It provides our pupils with the skills and technical knowledge necessary for them to express responses to ideas and experiences.
  • Our curriculum enables children to make healthy eating choices by teaching about nutrition. This positively impacts lifelong health and well-being.
  • We follow a ‘Design, Make, Evaluate’ approach to the teaching and learning of DT.
  • Opportunities to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
  • We have a dedicated, resourced kitchen area that the children enjoy using as part of their cooking experiences.
  • We offer an after school club led by teachers and learning support staff who promote the importance for good health and a healthy diet, and ways to keep healthy and safe.
  • We invite specialist artists in to work with the children and staff, to inspire them and challenge their thinking and creativity.
  • Whole school celebrations, competitions, events and exhibitions.

  • We encourage children to work on their own and collaborate with others on projects in two and three dimensions and on small and large scales.
  • Children are encouraged to evaluate their work and are taught resilience to achieve their goals.
  • Children are taught safety aspects of cooking and develop independence, cooking simple nutritious foods.
  • We believe that Design Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject to be used to stimulate creativity, imagination and inventiveness.
  • All children are able to access lessons in Design Technology through careful planning, differentiation and support.
  • Assessment and celebration of work.
  • Challenge for the more able children and additional support for children who require it.
