At Thorpe Primary School our vision is that Design Technology has the capacity to allow all children of all ages and abilities to imagine, experiment, make and evaluate in a creative manner. We believe that Design Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject to be used to stimulate creativity, imagination and inventiveness. It provides our pupils with the skills and technical knowledge necessary for them to express responses to ideas and experiences.
At Thorpe Primary School, Design and Technology develops children's skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food. It encourages children's creativity and encourages them to think about important issues, and as outlined in the National Curriculum document, we follow a ‘Design, Make, Evaluate’ approach to the teaching and learning of DT. Our engaging lessons provide our children with opportunities to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Children are encouraged to evaluate their work and are taught resilience to achieve their goals. We encourage children to work on their own and collaborate with others on projects in two and three dimensions and on small and large scales.
Children through school are taught cooking and nutrition in the curriculum and we provide a curriculum which enables children to make healthy eating choices. We believe teaching pupils to cook is an important part of promoting a whole school approach to health and wellbeing and attainment, helping us achieve high standards as a Healthy School. We have a dedicated, resourced kitchen area that the children enjoy using as part of their cooking experiences, where they are taught safety aspects of cooking and to develop independence, cooking simple nutritious foods. We offer an after school club led by teachers and learning support staff who promote the importance for good health and a healthy diet, and ways to keep healthy and safe.
We ensure that all children are able to access lessons in Design Technology through careful planning, differentiation and support. We use assessments to check progress and identify children who are performing well and require further challenge along with guided group intervention for children who are not meeting curriculum objectives within Design Technology.
