Origami Butterfly

20th May 2020

Origami can be quite tricky, but this butterfly is surprisingly easy and there are no complicated folds. Have a look at the pictures and instructions below and give it a try.

First you'll need a square piece of paper like the one below. Fold it in half and then unfold like this.

Turn the paper 90 degrees and then fold again. Your paper should now look like this.

Turn your paper over so it looks like this. Don't skip this step as it will make it easier later.

Then fold your paper corner to corner, unfold and repeat at the other corner.

Your paper should now look like this.

We are now going to fold the paper into a triangle by collapsing the folds we have just made; push in the sides like this and your triangle will come together.

You should now have a triangle like this, with the point of the triangle at the top.

We are now going to fold the top layer only, up towards the point of the triangle.

Now turn the whole thing over, so the fold you have just made are at the bottom and the point of the triangle is now facing down.

We are now going to fold the top layer only again, folding the point up and slightly overlapping like this..

Do not press down the crease too firmly, just press it across the middle, where my index finger is in this picture.

Now, turn it over again and fold over the overlap you have just made, you can even add a bit of glue to keep it in place.

Now we are almost there, you should have something that looks like this.

Finally, we are going to fold the butterfly in half like this, pressing firmly on the crease.

And that's it. Hopefully you have a butterfly that looks something like this.
