Today's art activity is Zentangle, which is a fun and relaxing way of creating unplanned, abstract patterns. And best of all, it is easy to learn; it's basically just fancy doodling! You don't need any special equipment or any particular drawing talent; all you need is a piece of paper and a sharp pencil and you are ready to go.

I have enlisted my daughter (Isobel aged 10 and 51 weeks) to demonstrate the technique.

The first thing you need to do is create a template for your patterns.  We did this by drawing lots of overlapping circles on a piece of A5 paper but you could use any shape or download a template.

Next fill each of the spaces in your design with a random pattern; use your own ideas or there are lots of pattern ideas on the internet, here's an example.

Keep going until each of the spaces in your design has been filled in. No need to add colour as this technique is black and white.
